I recently discovered a love for all things dresses. I’ve said before, I don’t wear a lot of dresses when I am teaching. It’s too uncomfortable with the amount of time I spend sitting on the floor. Then one day this summer, I threw on a light, airy dress after a day at the pool, and there was no better feeling. I was hooked. I found that they are also perfect for keeping cool with the fam at a carnival or street fest, date night, baseball game, and the list goes on.

I love reading fun and quirky facts about people, so I thought today I would share ten (strange) things about me.
  1. I love sleep more than anything in the world but I am also a night owl. I get a burst of energy every night around 9:00. Even if I try to go to sleep early, I just lie there awake for hours. That being said, I could sleep until noon if someone let me.
  2. I love exercising almost as much as I love sleep. I will choose it over any other activity every. single. time.
  3. I am deathly afraid of spiders. Like, I will not enter a room if there is a chance there might be a spider in it. Every night before bed, I check every corner of my bedroom to make sure there aren’t any. I also have an exterminator come every three months to remove any “spider presence”.
  4. I am also terrified of deep water. The thought of water deep enough where you can’t see the bottom makes me sick to my stomach.
  5. I cannot stand the sound of people chomping on their food. Gum chewers are the worst. I literally have to remove myself from a room if someone eats like a cow.
  6. I hate being home alone. And by alone, I mean when my husband is gone overnight. I am such a scaredy cat. He travels for work, and I have called him in tears a few times in the middle of the night sure that someone was trying to break into our house.
  7. I never make my own coffee. I know that makes me sound like a brat but Starbucks just makes it so much better! But in reality, I just always forget to in the throes of getting two children out the door in the morning.
  8. I am a huge germaphobe and hate airplanes because if it. All the recirculated air. Barf. So nasty. It has also led to my fear of flying.
  9. If I didn’t have a full time job, I would never wear regular clothes. As soon as I’m home, the pajamas come on. My husband claims he has never seen me in anything other than sweats. πŸ˜‰
  10. I love reading books backwards. I read the ending to find out what happens, and then I go back and read the whole thing from the beginning. I just can’t stand the suspense.

If you are looking for the perfect jeans for spring, these are it! They fit TTS, and have that loose, mom-jean look while still being tailored to the body. They are also a perfect ankle length for anyone over 5’1″. I had to get my hem taken in slightly to give them the look that I wanted. I love that you can wear these jeans with boots or flats, and still have some ankle exposed. I am always drawn towards distressed denim in the spring and summer since I tend to be more casual as the weather warms up. And the best news, these jeans just went on sale! I am shocked they haven’t sold out although they do look much cuter on than in the stock photos, so don’t let that deter you.

If you are a mom like me, you probably don’t wear a ton of expensive jewelry. You’ve got small children pulling at you all day long, and toddlers going through your jewelry box to play dress up. Most of my “expensive” jewelry, I’ve tucked away for safe keeping. I can get away wearing this necklace and this necklace daily mainly because they are almost choker length but somedays I miss wearing something with a little more pizazz.

Even though having kids makes it difficult to wear jewelry, I do still like to pull out a fun piece of jewelry every now and again. I recently discovered Tiny Lumber, and I am so excited that I did. It looks expensive bit it ISN’T! Tiny Lumber makes jewelry entirely out of WOOD. Everything is handmade in the US, and you can even have custom pieces made. Everything is so reasonably priced, and looks much more expensive than it is. The designs are also durable so I am not worried about wearing them around the kids. They have statement pieces like this one, and then other designs like this and this that you could wear everyday.

I don’t know about you, but this winter has sucked every ounce of life from my soul. In the last six weeks, our household has been hit with the Norovirus, Bronchitis, ear infections, random, no-named cold and fever viruses, and now, Influenza A. And it’s only the beginning of February. I am ready to pack up and move to warmer climates, and that is something that this homebody doesn’t say often. In fact, as I write this post, I’m pretty sure I am coming down with the “I got the flu shot” version of the flu. I mean, that’s what happens when you sleep next to your sick kiddo. #momlife

Any who, I’ve worn this outfit pictured almost too many times to admit. It transitions so well from gym to street. You can easily get away running errands in it, or even out to a casual brunch. I wore it to the gym on Thursday, and then to dinner afterwards. I spent the weekend in it (I did wash it πŸ˜‰ ) since I was cooped up nursing a sick kid, and it is super cozy. This fleece is so warm, and it is roomy enough that you can layer it.

I am also AH-bsessed with my new shoes. I bought them to be just a casual shoe but they are so comfortable that I can definitely run in them. And how cute is the pink color for spring? They come in about 8 different colors if pink isn’t your thing. I love the gray ones as well.

Easy health and fitness changes to make now…and keep all year

We all have high hopes for a new year, and if you’re like me, mounds of things that you want to change. I have found though, that positive changes only happen, and continue to happen, if they are small and gradually happen over time, through active exercise, regenerative medicine and self-care.

Below I have outlined FIVE easy health and fitness changes that you can start today, and maintain all year:

  1. Set a date and time to exercise at least 3 days/week. Don’t just say, “I’ll workout on Monday.” Figure out your exact when and where. On Tuesday, I will run for 30 minutes outside. I will do this ____ while my kids are ____. Pack/lay out your gym clothes the night before. Have your pre workout snack ready to go. Pack a water bottle. Do not set unrealistic expectations for yourself. If you NEVER wake up before 6am, do not schedule a 5am workout. Be realistic with yourself. My best time is right after work before I pick the kids up from daycare. I change at work, and eat a small snack in the car on the way there. NO excuses.
  2. Make one small health change, and stick with it. Bring your lunch each day instead of buying, add in daily vitamins, eat an apple instead of chips, switch to Stevia instead of Splenda, start buying natural deodorant. Pick something and do it! Feeling brave? Make a small change each week.
  3. Follow the 80/20 rule. You will not be able to maintain a diet if you deprive yourself of everything that you love. Everything in moderation. I try to eat relatively healthy on weekdays, and then let myself indulge on the weekends. I love a good burger, fries, ice cream, and wine. During the week, I eat two eggs every morning, a banana for a snack, turkey with hummus and carrots for lunch, and nuts or an apple for a snack EVERY day. Dinner is some sort of meat and veggie. Boring, I know but it is what works for me. The best way to maintain this is to plan out your meals, have the food in the house, and pack your lunch with healthy food.
  4. Invest in a good pair of workout shoes. Trust me on this one. Some of my favorites are here, here, and here.
  5. Cauliflower. I’m a lover of all things starchy and covered in butter. So to keep myself from eating all the pasta and potatoes, I buy a lot of cauliflower. Roast it, boil it, turn it into rice – it’s delicious any way. Add a little butter and salt and pepper, and you’ll almost forget you are not eating a baked potato. Almost πŸ˜‰

Winter is all about layers and leggings, am I right? I’ve talked about my love for winter layering here. For some reason, I only want to wear leggings and tee shirts that I can layer under wraps and sweaters when it’s cold. Leggings are just so much cozier, and easier to put into boots than jeans are. This wrap I’m wearing is another winter staple that I throw on over everything. It’s from a small boutique near my house but I’ve linked similar below.

I’ve had my Hunters for years, and get so much wear out of them. They can double as rain or snow boots, and are super durable and comfortable. Sometime I wear them to work, intending to change into different shoes, and just end of wearing them all day long.

This long sleeve tee is only $19, and perfect tee for layering with leggings. It’s lightweight and long enough to cover your behind. It also come in a tons of colors. I usually like my tees oversized but I sized way down in this – to an XXS.

One Cardigan, Two Ways

Each year like clockwork, November 1st hits and I start reaching for layers upon layers. Most days I leave the house looking like a Sherpa. Anything that I can layer on, and peel off throughout the day is fair game. Today I wore two scarves, TWO! And I didn’t even notice I was wearing two until Ryan yelled at me to take them off (scarfs scare the little guy). He’s an odd one that son of mine.

If you follow my stories on Instagram then you know that I have been battling the stomach flu everywhere I turn. It’s been brutal. It is my worst nightmare. I literally want to curl up in a hole and not come out until May.

But alas, that is something that I cannot do. So until then, I will just turn into a hermit-like creature that only wears things that are fuzzy. This outfit is something you will typically see me in from December through March. My tops this time of year need to be warm and cozy. The more they feel like a sweatshirt, the better. Normally, I only wear my Uggs around the house as slippers until it’s really too cold to care what I look like. Then I just make the conscious choice not to take them off all winter (sorry, Dean!). πŸ˜‰

Slouchy Sweaters

I am ALL about slouchy sweaters when the weather turns cooler. Personally, I don’t like my sweaters to fit tight. I feel like sweaters should fit roomy and cozy, so I tend to shy away from sweaters that are meant to be form fitting. The bigger, the better, is how I like ’em. I usually size up, like I did here to get that extra slouch.

I found this sweater at a store that I have not shopped at in probably ten years. I feel like the store had taken a turn, and didn’t really have it’s style niche – if that makes any sense. The clothing had also gotten a little to “young” looking for my taste. So I don’t really know what made me go in when I was shopping the other day but I was shocked to find so many beautiful (and inexpensive) sweaters.
