Halloween Hangover Treadmill Run

Shoes

This run was inspired by all of the Reeses Peanut Butter Cups I plan on consuming after my children are in bed. I already have my daughter on the hunt for those tasty orange squares (#eatallthereeses) when she is Trick or Treating. So today, we are going to activate and build our fast twitch muscle fibers, enabling those powerful bursts of movement, and in the end, burning off all those delicious Reeses.

Your body contains two types of muscle fibers – Slow Twitch and Fast Twitch. Slow Twitch Fibers help with endurance feats such as distance running. Fast Twitch Muscle Fibers fatigue quickly and consume a lot of energy, i.e. burn a lot of calories, i.e. burn off those Reeses. You can train your body to utilize both types of muscle fibers through different types of training. Today, we will be working on speed.

I am keeping today simple because “Halloween Hangover”, and who wants to be reading lots of instructions when your body feels like peanut butter mush covered in greasy pizza. Don’t you love my analogy? Today (and tomorrow, who are we kidding?) I am going to need all. the. coffee.

Any who, this whole run is on a flat road – incline of 0.0 or 1.0 (your choice! An incline of 1.0 mimics running outdoors).

0:00 – 3:00   4.0 MPH

3:00 – 6:00   6.0 MPH

6:00 – 30:00  Repeat the following 8 times:

  • 1 minute @ 7.4 – 8.0 MPH (pick a speed that is difficult to talk at but not so hard that you want to fall off the treadmill)
  • 1 minute @ 6.4 – 7.0 MPH  (running speed – could maintain this speed for 15 minutes)
  • 1 minute @ 5.4 – 6.0 MPH (this should be a speed you could maintain for 30 minutes)

30:00 – 33:00   Slow Jog or Walk

33:00 – 36:00 Walk at an incline of 3.0

And you are done torching calories!!!

Happy Halloween, Friends! Go enjoy those Reeses 😉

XO,

Sara

10 Minute Total Body Workout

I love being able to workout at home. With kids, sometimes it’s the only way to get it done. We don’t have the space for a treadmill unless we put it in the garage, and who wants to run in their spider covered garage? Not me! So I have to get creative.

In lieu of a treadmill post this week, I filmed a quick 10 minute total body workout that you can do anywhere. Literally, I do this in my messy basement while my kids play around me (as you can see from the video). All you need is a set of medium to heavy dumbbells. I stick with either 8 lbs or 10 lbs depending on how I’m feeling that day. For this video, I was using 8 lbs. I try to get in two rounds for a nice little workout.

I also created a YouTube page where you will be able to view all of my workouts. My goal is to film a new workout each week so I hope you will subscribe and follow along!

***I am aware I need to work on my videography skills.

I hope you’ll try it out and enjoy! I’d love to hear your comments.

Treadmill Tuesdays

Today was a day unlike any other. It got me thinking, “Where would I be without my wonderful colleagues that I go to battle with each day?” You make each day bearable, you help me see and laugh at the ridiculousness that consumes our daily lives. The work we do is not easy. We are fighting a battle we have a great chance of losing. Public education is on the brink of demise. Throw into the equation gang violence, turf wars, a lack of funding and resources, overcrowded classrooms and you’ve got yourself a recipe for disaster. Unless you work with people as wonderful and dedicated as I do. Then you might have a chance at making a difference, of winning this uphill battle.

After today’s emotional roller coaster, I was in need of a good run. Sweat out the frustration! I left work later than usual, my room still in disarray and work needing to be done. I don’t know where the time went this afternoon! And did I mention that my classroom had no heat? So after all of today’s drama, I’m affectionately terming today, “‘Treadmill Tuesday”.

Today’s run was all about getting it done, and getting it done quickly. I wanted a bowl of warm soup, my sweatpants and fleece socks. Here’s what my run today looked like:

  • 0:00 – 3:00   3.9 MPH
  • 3:00 – 6:00   6.0 MPH
  • 6:00 – 7:00   8.0 MPH
  • 7:00 – 8:00   6.0 MPH
  • 8:00 – 11:00   6.2 MPH
  • 11:00 – 12:00   8.1 MPH
  • 12:00 – 13:00   6.0 MPH
  • 13:00 – 16:00   6.3 MPH
  • 16:00 – 17:00   8.2 MPH
  • 17:00 – 18:00   6.0 MPH
  • 18:00 – 21:00   6.4 MPH
  • 21:00 – 22:00   8.3 MPH
  • 22:00 – 23:00   6.0 MPH
  • 23:00 – 26:00   6.5 MPH
  • 26:00 – 27:00   8.4 MPH
  • 27:00 – 28:00   6.0 MPH
  • 28:00 – 31:00    6.6 MPH
  • 31:00 – 32:00   8.4 MPH
  • 32:00 – 39:00   6.5 MPH
  • 39:00 – 45:00   3.6 MPH @ 3% incline

Looks confusing, I know. It made a lot more sense while I was doing it. There is a method to my madness!

And to top off the day, the cat sh*t in Dean’s new Cole Haans. We have no idea how she managed to do it. Dean actually asked me if I thought she brought it there herself. Yup. She definitely did. Along with her blanket and her cane. She really is the worst creature on the planet.

Did anything funny happen to you today?

🙂

Monday Sculpt

What’s the best part about shootings at school? You make it home in time for Sculpt! It really is not funny…but it is true. A little after 5, staff was asked to leave the buildings because of shootings next door. But that’s another story, for another time…

One of my favorite things about Monday nights, aside from the fact that Monday is over, is the sculpting class I attend at SixPax. It is a perfect end to a long day with tired kiddos. Fayth and her team do such an amazing job. If you live in Chicago and are near Michigan and 14th, I highly suggest you check them out. My husband actually commented yesterday on, “How tight my abs are.” This is a pretty strong compliment for someone who loves french fries as much as I do.

It’s a great class for me because it gets me doing all the things I would never do unless someone was forcing me. I can run endless miles on my own but weights and squats and planks bore me to no end. I’d rather sit on the couch with my cat or play on my iPad. I’m a fat kid at heart. Another one of the reasons I love this place so much – they always have a motivating quote on the wall. Gotta love chalkboard paint!

Joanna is the Sculpt instructor.  She is high-energy and motivating. She reminds me a lot of Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde teaching “The Bend and Snap”. Sculpt incorporates short bursts of high intensity exercises with sculpting exercises. Think planks, push-ups and high-knees. We do so much glute work that I’m shaking at the end. While the class can be upwards of 10 people, Joanna individualizes her instruction. While she’s constantly reminding me to pull my shoulders back, she’s telling someone else to tuck their stomach under. Joanna is teaching me to break all of the bad habits I picked up from years of gymnastics.

We use a handful of props in Sculpt. A mat, obviously, 2 2 lb weights, a resistance band, Gliders (LOVE), and a Pilates ball.

Attending a class on Monday sets the tone for my entire workout week. I’ve found that if I skip Monday, it is harder to find motivation to workout the rest of the week. Classes are always my first choice on Mondays. I’m always tired, I usually have a headache, and the gym is the last place I’d like to be. I sign up for classes weeks in advance, put them in my calendar, and it’s a sure-fire way to get me there. Add some cardio by walking to your class instead of driving. I know it’s cold but Sculpt is done barefoot so throw on your Hunters and get going!

What’s stopping you?

🙂 Happy Monday

A Treadmill Run For When The Last Thing You Feel Like Doing Is Running

Happy Sunday!

I woke up this morning feeling disgusting. I slept horribly thanks to the 4 am wake-up call from my husband. I have to remind him repeatedly that he is 30, not 21. And I do not need you to tell me when you get home by banging on the bedroom door that I lock because I get scared being home alone. I know you are home because I can hear you bumbling all over the apartment. Needless to say, I’ve been dragging all day.

I got out of bed around 9, and worked on lesson plans until noon. After running some errands, I was back home around 2 trying to will myself to put my running shoes on. I work out 6-7 days a week. I make sure to run 4-5 of those days. One of the things I dread most about winter is that most of the time it is too cold to run outside. Usually, I can suck it up, throw on my Lululemon Dog Runner Pants and My Under Armour Storm Fleece and I’m good to go. Today was not one of those days. I stared at my shoes for a long time, played with the cat, thumbed through an US Weekly. Procrastinate much?

I absolutely HATE running on a treadmill. I.get.so.bored. This winter I have started running intervals, instead of just distance, and thankfully, it really makes running on a treadmill much more bearable. Here’s what I managed to do today. Not my best run but the time went quickly, and it was surprisingly easy and painless. Not to mention I had Carrie Underwood’s “Two Black Cadillacs” playing on repeat most of the time.

  • 0:00 – 3:00   3.9 MPH
  • 3:00 – 8:00   6.0 MPH
  • 8:00 – 9:00   8.0 MPH
  • 9:00 – 10:00   5.6 MPH
  • 10:00 – 15:00   6.2 MPH
  • 15:00 – 16:00   8.2 MPH
  • 16:00 – 17:00   5.6 MPH
  • 17:00 – 22:00   6.4 MPH
  • 22:00 – 23:00   8.4 MPH
  • 23:00 – 24:00   5.6 MPH
  • 24:00 – 29:00   6.6 MPH
  • 29:00 – 30:00   8.6 MPH
  • 30:00 – 36:00   6.5 MPH
  • 36:00 – 45:00   3.9 MPH @ 3% incline (I have to do things in 3’s. It’s weird. I know.)

And my Sunday run is done! Throw in 4 sets of 10 push ups (2 sets wide, 2 sets narrow) and 3 3-minute planks, and you’ve got a total body workout in under an hour!

Getting myself to the gym is always the worst part but it’s never as hard as you think it’s going to be! Now it’s home for a relaxing night of more lesson planning, laundry, Shameless, and Revenge.

What did you do for yourself today?

Blogging, Oh How I’ve Missed You

Ever since the Grammy’s, I’ve developed a love affair with Carrie Underwood’s “Two Black Cadillacs”. I was listening to this song on repeat today while dragging myself through a treadmill run when it hit me how much I enjoy writing, and miss doing it for pleasure. So here I am. I’ve decided though, to take my blog in a different direction this time around. After all, when you spend 12-14 hours a day working, the last thing I found that I wanted to do at night was write about it.

I am a little bit of a fitness fanatic; It is a small obsession of mine. Since it does take a lot to balance work and life, and still find time to fit in a daily workout, I’m going to incorporate that into my (hopefully) daily posts. In the past year, I was also lucky enough to marry the  funniest guy I’ve ever met who always has me smiling. We are also parents to the world’s most ridiculous cat. Actually, neither of us are sure exactly what kind of creature she really is. It’s definitely not a cat though. For one, she speaks English. Her favorite word is “no”. She loves the shower and pizza. I’m pretty sure she is a squirrel.

It’s a pretty hilarious life, and I’m so thankful that it’s mine.
